FOR ESMé FOR OTHERS

Introducing the unabashedly feminist project of Toronto’s Martha Meredith, aka For Esmé, which is an “exploration of self-love and the courage of conviction in uncertain times.” Her new single ‘For Others’ is a prime example of how gendered traditions continue to be accepted in a modern society. Through a sea of padded synths and in her sugary vocal, Meredith paints the image of a wedding day and raises a series of complicated issues surrounded the ceremony, in particular the bride’s role. The uncomfortable nature of being given away by her father, of vowing loyalty to her lover, of the watchful eyes of the others. The song doesn’t claim to have the answers, as the Canadian artist states: “Others offers no clear answers in considering the families we make and the families that raise us, instead softly reflecting on what we carry forward and what we leave behind.” - HT
